Fortunately, many common cactus pests can be managed successfully when they are identified early.
The key is choosing the right treatment for the right pest.
There is no single pesticide that is best for every cactus problem. Mealybugs, root mealybugs, scale insects, spider mites, and fungus gnats are biologically different pests, and the treatment that works beautifully for one may do very little for another.

What Should You Use for Scale?
Scale insects usually look like small brown, tan, gray, or whitish bumps firmly attached to plant tissue.

Fungus gnats thrive in damp, organic growing media.

For cacti, especially rare, variegated, or colorful Gymnocalycium, don't assume that a product is harmless simply because it is marketed as natural.

Is Rubbing Alcohol a Pesticide?
Technically, ordinary isopropyl rubbing alcohol is not an EPA-registered pesticide, but it is widely used by home growers as a targeted treatment for mealybugs.
Colorado State University Extension and UC IPM both recognize carefully applied isopropyl alcohol as a useful way to remove or kill individual mealybugs on houseplants. Both also warn that alcohol can injure sensitive plants, so a small test area is advisable.
For Gymnocalycium:
Use it as a targeted spot treatment, not as an excuse to saturate the entire cactus.
A cotton swab gives you considerably more control.
Don't Treat Rot With Pesticide
This is extremely important.
If your Gymnocalycium is soft, mushy, collapsing, or has brown or black deteriorating roots, the problem may be root rot rather than insects.
A pesticide will not repair rotten roots.
